EUC Workshop on High Performance Computing met with success

The Astrophysics and High Performance Computing (AHPC) Research group and the Department of Computer Science and Engineering of the European University of Cyprus organized on 19th of July 2016 a Workshop on High Performance Computing and Applications.

The workshop that was met with success was held at EUC campus and brought together scientists from Cyprus and nearby countries with research interests related on High Performance Computing for discussion, exchange of ideas, collaboration and further exploration of High Performance techniques for important applications in science.  Topics covered in the workshop include new advances in HCP, Parallel and Distributed Algorithms and Architectures, applications of HPC in Physics, Astrophysics, Medical Imaging and Engineering.

The participants of the workshop discussed some of the most recent developments and trends related to High Performance Computing, such as techniques towards the goals of exascale and petascale computing, that is computing systems capable of at least one a billion billion or quadrillion floating point calculations per second. These goals nowadays become even more significant due to the remarkable growth and demands on applications related to Big Data. Some of the research approaches discussed include approximate computing, near-memory computation model and reversible computing.

The scientific outcomes of workshop pointed out the need of further continuation of this and relevant events for the further development and promotion of the High Performance Community in Cyprus.  The Astrophysics and High Performance Computing research group and the European University can play and is willing to play a leading role towards this goal.
